What is HYVET?
HYVET is a single injection treatment to replace synovial fluid, viscosupplementation. It is based on a natural, safe and proven technology (cross-linked hyaluronic acid). Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring molecule that provides lubrication and shock absorbing effects in a joint.

HYVET is a transparent gel which contains very high levels of HA. When injected in joints drained by surgery it directly relieves pain, restores lubrication and shock absorbing effects which improves joint function.

How is HA made?
Hyaluronic acid is a polymer of disaccharides containing D-glucuronic acid and D-N-acetyl-glucosamine. It is currently mostly produced through bacterial fermentation of sugars to a high degree of purity for biologic use.

How safe is HYVET treatment?
HYVET is created by using crosslinking - an advanced process with hyaluronic acid. It is a highly purified product prepared without using any materials derived from animals, which ensures that the risk of impurities is almost zero. HYVET is treated by the horses body in the same way as the body's own hyaluronic acid and it has not been reported any immune or anaphylactic reactions. Due to the cross-linking process there are no short fragments of the HA molecule chains which can cause side effects.

The cross-linking process of hyaluronic acid stabilization enables HYVET to resist breakdown and have a longer lasting effect than most other HA products. HYVET also contains high levels of concentrated HA, 2,2%. This extends considerably the half-life of HYVET whereas the HA in many other hyaluronic acid products disappears within a few days after the injection. This is the main reason a single injection is all that is needed of HYVET whereas other products often need several injections.

How does HYVET work?
HYVET contains high levels of concentrated hyaluronic acid (HA, hyaluronic acid) which mimic the effects of natural HA. It resets HA levels that are lost during surgery. HA is known to control pain and as it has visco-elastic properties it can provide cushioning and shock-absorbing effect.
